CT-8090AM vs Rothenberger Roflare: Is the $200 Save Worth It?

By Max ยท Islepath ยท Updated June 2026 ยท 7 min read

Every HVAC tech has heard "buy the German one." But the Rothenberger Roflare 50006 costs $280-350 USD. The CT-8090AM (the same eccentric-cam design) costs about $60-80 wholesale. So: is the Rothenberger 4ร— better, or are you paying for the name?

Notice how similar the spec sheets are. That's because the CT-8090AM is the same basic design (eccentric cam, 45ยฐ single cone, Imperial/Metric dual scale) โ€” just made in a different factory.

What You Actually Get With the Rothenberger

1. Brand-trust packaging. Rothenberger ships in a hard-shell case with foam inserts. The CT-8090AM ships in a cardboard box. If you're storing tools in a van, both work fine.

2. Tighter tolerance on the cone. Rothenberger's 45ยฐ cone is CNC-ground to tighter spec. In practice: both produce flares that pass leak tests. The 0.01mm difference doesn't matter on residential copper.

3. Warranty & support. Rothenberger has a 2-year warranty with a US service center. The CT-8090AM has a 1-year warranty, and you ship back to China for replacement.

What You Don't Get

1. The $200 doesn't go to better steel. Same cast iron body, same SCM-440 alloy cone.

2. The $200 doesn't go to better R&D. The eccentric-cam design is from a 1990s Rothenberger patent that has long expired. Anyone can make it.

3. The $200 doesn't go to longer life. Both tools last 5-10 years with normal use. We have no evidence Rothenberger lasts longer.

When to Buy the Rothenberger

- You need US warranty service for a contract job (commercial HVAC, government install).

- Your shop requires "name-brand" tools for insurance / liability reasons.

- You cut 50+ flares per day, every day, and need the absolute tightest tolerance (commercial refrigeration).

When to Buy the CT-8090AM

- Residential / light commercial HVAC (90% of HVAC techs fall here).

- You run a service business and want 5-10 kits at half the cost (save $1,000-2,000 per team).

- You're starting out and need a real tool, not a toy. CT-8090AM is a real workshop-grade tool, not a knockoff.

FAQ

Is the CT-8090AM a knockoff of Rothenberger?

No. The eccentric-cam flaring design is from an expired patent. The CT-8090AM is an OEM tool made in Taiwan/China to the same engineering standard, sold under its own model number. Islepath doesn't brand it as a Rothenberger alternative โ€” it's its own tool.

Will my flares leak if I use CT-8090AM?

No โ€” if you use it correctly. Both tools produce flares that meet SAE J533 spec. Always do a leak check with nitrogen at 150 psi before charging refrigerant.

Can I get replacement cones?

Yes for both. CT-8090AM cones are $8-12 each (fits 3/16โ€ณ to 3/4โ€ณ). Order 1-2 spares when you order the tool.

Does Islepath ship to US/EU?

Yes. Sample orders ship in 3-5 days via DHL. Bulk (MOQ 10) ships in 15-25 days via sea freight. We handle CE / RoHS paperwork for EU imports.
