HVAC Startup Tool Kit: 3 Tools You Need on Day One

By Max ยท Islepath ยท Updated July 2026 ยท 7 min read

Starting an HVAC company? Before your first service call, you need three tools in your van. Not five, not ten โ€” three. This is the kit that covers 90% of residential HVAC work: copper pipe cutting, flaring, and tube expansion.

๐Ÿ“… Updated July 20, 2026 โ€” All three tools (CT-274, CT-8090AM, CT-N300A) verified in stock today. US-bound DHL shipping: 5โ€“7 business days. Bulk order lead time: 15โ€“20 days from PO. Get a quote โ†’

Tool #1: Tube Cutter โ€” For Cutting Copper Pipe Cleanly

Every HVAC job starts with cutting pipe. A good tube cutter gives you a square, burr-free cut that seats properly in a flaring tool. A hacksaw cut leaves metal shavings and a slightly oval edge โ€” both cause leaks later.

For residential work, you need to cut 1/4โ€ณ through 7/8โ€ณ OD copper โ€” that's 7 sizes. Pick a tube cutter that covers this range in one tool, like the CT-274 (4-28mm) or CT-312 (6-42mm for larger commercial lines).

Tool #2: Flaring Tool โ€” For Joining Copper to Service Valves

Modern mini-split and central air systems use flare fittings โ€” not soldered joints. A 45ยฐ eccentric flaring tool is the standard. It produces consistent flare height across multiple joints, which is critical for leak-free connections on refrigerant lines.

Look for one that does both Imperial (3/16โ€ณ to 3/4โ€ณ) and Metric sizes. The CT-8090AM is a popular pick for residential HVAC work โ€” it's the same tool used by OEMs in the field.

Tool #3: Hydraulic Tube Expander โ€” For Making Branch Lines

When you need to add a branch line to an existing refrigerant line (common on retrofit jobs), a tube expander lets you flare one end of the existing pipe to accept a tee fitting โ€” no need to add a new solder joint. Hydraulic expanders are faster and more reliable than manual ones, especially on thicker copper.

The CT-N300A hydraulic expander is a common starter pick โ€” interchangeable heads cover most residential line sizes.

FAQ

Can I use a hacksaw instead of a tube cutter?

Technically yes, practically no. A hacksaw cut needs deburring and is rarely square. On refrigerant lines, even 1ยฐ off causes leaks. A $30 tube cutter pays for itself in 2 jobs.

Do I need both Imperial and Metric?

In the US, Imperial only. In Europe and Asia, both. If you do cross-border work, buy a dual-version flaring tool (CT-8090AM does both in one head).

What about warranty?

Islepath provides 6-month warranty on manufacturing defects. Most failures are user damage (dropped, over-torqued), which isn't covered.
